Amazing overwintered turnips

In a weedy corner of the Firepit Garden, amongst grass, Lemon Balm seedlings, and under a blackberry bramble, these turnips: they volunteered last Fall after turnips went to seed nearby. Still not woody, with a good sharp mustardy flavor. Amazing! This is why turnips are considered a survival crop — because [...]

Heirloom seeds planted at the Firepit

After three days of bed prep, I seeded some special varieties of greens I got from Chabo & Lee of Natural Harvest Farm in Canby. It is quite an honor to be planting seeds from these folks. When it comes to farming, I have called Chabo “the master”. He has been the [...]

Seed saving with the Seventh Day Adventists in Newberg

On Saturday, three of us went to a Seventh Day Adventist Church in Newberg. We had been contacted by someone there interested in learning how to save seeds for vegetables and other crops. She said they had a lot of land to plant on, so perhaps we could work out something where we [...]

Falling star on the Equinox

I write tonight from an acreage in the country, out past St. Helens, visiting folks who just moved out here from the city. There’s a fire in the wood-burning stove and a cat named Margot sitting near my feet. Sunroot Gardens farmed in these folks’ yard this past season, mostly carrots that were [...]

The future of farming: Between freedom & fear

[NOTE: The following is an email sent to a list of local CSA farmers, in response to a question from another CSA farmer, who asked: "Just wondered if any PACSAC farms had noticed a decrease in prospective CSA share sales or interest as a result of the current economy?"]
Sunroot Gardens has been sold out of [...]

Pink Turnip Soup and Hearty Spring Salad

Recipes 3/9/09
Staring out at the falling, melting snow, I’m eating leftover quiche and thinking about the good food I made for dinner last night.

Pink Turnip and Potato Soup
Hearty Spring Greens with Radish, Carrot, and Lemon-Shallot vinaigrette
Broccoli and Goat Cheese Quiche
Cara Cara oranges and candied Cocktail Citrus rind

I can’t take [...]

Magnificent Mushrooms and a Book Recommendation

Well, it only used a couple of ingredients from Sunroot Gardens, but it was amazing, so here goes…
Do you ever pick up a loaf or two of dumpstered bread and then wonder what to do with it?  Stale bread is good, but the problem with it is that it gets a little staler every day, [...]

Calliope calls it: “Survival Gardening”

I have been spending time lately with Calliope, of Calliope’s Table, a new urban bike-based CSA here in the City of Roses. In talking about what we’re trying to do as urban farmers in these times of crumbling empire, she used the phrase, “Survival Gardening”.
The word “survival” cuts to the chase; it finds its [...]

Beet & turnip quesadilla

Here’s what happened for dinner last night at the Winter Palace.
Beets & turnips from Seuleman at the People’s Farmers’ Market, cubed and sauteed in sunflower oil.  Steamed in blackberry vinegar (gained at the Seed Exchange in January).  A little Tilamook cheese on top at the end, melted under the corn tortillas, and served like so.  [...]
